A few introductory words on techniqueArtistic, expressive singing requires a technique that allows the instrument to be responsive and free. Through the correct, basic technique, the singer has the best possible muscular action that he needs to sing freely. My teaching methods are based on an approach to singing that technically allows the singer to sing naturally, without manipulation, and is enhanced by vocal exercises and vocal literature, which are designed and chosen for each student individually. It is my goal as a teacher to strive in helping the student to find the best in himself and to inspire him to reach his goal. My vocal technique has been founded upon my studies in the American university system, as well as my European education and experience from my national and international career. Professor Hermanus Baer at Northwestern University taught me the technique: a combination of studies of Dr. Gillis Bratt from Sweden (the teacher of Jussi Bjorling and Kirsten Flagstad) and Giovanni Battista Lamperti, the founder of the term, “inhalare la voce” (inhale the voice). One nowadays calls this the “Swedish/Italian” school. Prof. Baer worked with me intensively on this technique together with his own ideas and vocalizations designed for me individually. He was also the teacher of Sherrill Millnes, the well-known baritone, who had a great career singing many years at the New York Metropolitan Opera and making numerous recordings. Kirsten Flagstad, the great Wagnerian soprano, studied with Dr. Bratt and supposedly said that she had suddenly doubled the size of her voice, without effort.
